ALL-CITY CHORAL FESTIVAL HANDBOOK

 

PURPOSE

The All-City Choral Festival serves as a means of recognizing outstanding choral students from the Huntsville City School System and of providing an opportunity for a rewarding and educational experience from a successful conductor.

FESTIVAL STRUCTURE

The All-City Choral Festival is made up of 4 different choirs consisting of:

  1. One Middle School Choir, 6th grade girls and 6th grade boys with unchanged voices
  2. One Middle School Choir, SAB, 7th grade girls, 7th-8th grade boys, and 6th grade boys with changed voices
  3. One Senior High School Choir, SATB, girls, grades 10-12, and boys grade 9-12
  4. One Women’s Choir, SSA, girls, grades 8 & 9. (Tenth grade girls may audition for the 8th-9th Grade Women’s Choir upon recommendation from the Director and approval by the President.)

The MS SAB Choir and MS 6th Grade Treble Choir will each sing 3 selections. The 8th & 9th Grade Women’s Choir will sing 4 selections and the High School SATB Choir will sing 5 selections. The combined choirs will sing the Wilhousky “Battle Hymn of the Republic” to be conducted by the President, or a designate.

Each student will be judged on his/her knowledge of the music, beauty and vitality of tone, and pitch matching. Directors will notify the students of audition results at their respective schools.

Audition procedures are as follows:

  1. ALL students will be responsible for knowing all of the music. Each director will be provided a practice tracks to aid in the learning of the music. These tracks are available on this web site. Click the “Learning Tracks” link in the resource bar on the right side of this page.
  2. The 6th Grade Treble Choir, the 6th-8th Grade SAB Choir, and the 8th & 9th Grade Women’s Choir will audition in small groups.
  3. The High School SATB Choir will be auditioned in the “All-State” style (10 at a time, but singing individually).
  4. The choirs will be auditioned by members of HCDA.

FEES

A fee of $25.00 is charged for all students who pass the audition and are selected to participate in the All-City festival. This covers student medals, guest conductor expenses, and concert facility use. By charging this fee, there will be no admission charge to the concert or parking expense. This fee is collected differently at each school. Please ask your director about the collection procedure at your school.
NO MONEY WILL BE COLLECTED AT THE AUDITIONS!

REHEARSALS

All-City rehearsals and the festival are held at First Baptist Church, 600 Governor’s Drive, Huntsville, Alabama. The 45th Annual All-City Festival rehearsal schedule is as follows:

1:00 - 3:30 p.m. - Middle School SATB and 6th Grade Choirs rehearse

6:00 - 9:00 p.m. - 8th & 9th Grade Women and High School SATB rehearses

Tuesday, October 25, 2016

8:00 - 11:30 a.m. - Middle School SATB and 6th Grade Choir

11:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. - All Choirs rehearse Battle Hymn of the Republic

1:00 - 3:30 - 8th & 9th Grade Women and High School SATB

7:00 p.m. - CONCERT. (*All performers in place no later than 6:30 p.m.)

ATTENDANCE POLICY

No rehearsals shall be missed during the two days of All-City rehearsals with the guest clinician. If a student is tardy or absent, he/she will be dismissed from the festival and will not be able to sing in the concert. The child’s director, the President, and the First Vice-President consider emergency situations on a case-by-case basis. If a student does not perform in the Concert, he/she will not be considered a member of the All-City Chorus and will not receive an All-City pin or medal.

CONDUCT POLICY

Students will conduct themselves in accordance with all policies set forth in the Huntsville City Schools Parent/Student Handbook. There will be no use of electronic devices during rehearsals. Students who are dismissed from any rehearsal or from the festival performance for inappropriate conduct are subject to the Attendance Policy stated above.

AWARDS

Certificates are awarded to those 12th grade students who have performed in the All-City Choral Festival Concert for six or seven years.
